Records Manager Phil Astley will create a record of his own this Sunday (October 7) when he runs his very first marathon.
But the pain of pounding an exhausting 26.2 miles across hilly terrain just three days before his 40th birthday will be worth it for he'll also make a whopping sum for a cause close to his heart – the National Autistic Society.
Phil is one of thousands of runners taking part in the Baxters Loch Ness Marathon.
And he's raising funds for the Society as a way of saying thanks for the help and support they gave when Phil's son was diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Said the father of three who works for the University of Aberdeen: "Our son Andrew, who is now five, was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome two years ago.
"The National Autistic Society gave us fantastic support with a wide range of issues covering everything from diet and education to the life skills required to get the most out of your child. They have been a tremendous help."
Phil, whose training at its peak saw him running 60 to 70 miles a week, has already surpassed his fundraising target. He said: "Initially I was aiming to raise around £1,000 but I easily exceeded that target thanks to the generosity of so many people.
"Then I thought I would aim for £50 a mile, but again I have surpassed that.
"Now I am hoping to raise £1,500 for the National Autistic Society which is a truly deserving cause."
