Champagne corks will be popping later today (Monday, September 24) when Aberdeen’s new student radio station goes live.
The University of Aberdeen station, called Aberdeen Student Radio (ASR), will start streaming on the internet from 12 noon.
All the radio station DJs will be present wearing branded tee-shirts and sipping champagne to mark the first student station on campus for over a decade.
The official radio launch party will take place this evening, starting at the Union on Little John Street and then continuing on to Liquid Nightclub, where free entry will be given with the ASR flyer handed out during Freshers' Week.
The University has funded the project to the tune of £10,000 with the Students Association also contributing a significant sum to get the station off the ground.
Angela Fraser, Student Association President, said: "There's been a lot of work to get to this point, but it's brilliant that we're able to give students the chance to experience radio broadcasting again.
"And with the campus now going wireless it means students will be able to tune into ASR on their laptops. It's a great time to be in Aberdeen."
Programmes will include wide-ranging music slots embracing everything from alternative rock to classic jazz; sports updates and a range of chat shows covering politics, current affairs and the student issues of the day.
Sandy McKinnon, ASR Station Manager, added: "We want as many students as possible to get involved with ASR. There's going to be a diverse listening schedule and we'll also be encouraging live and local music as well as trying to feature new or unsigned bands that want to showcase their talents to students."
