Boosting student employability

Boosting student employability

A new post has been created at the University of Aberdeen to help make students more attractive to employers.

Dr Joy Perkins has been appointed as the Careers Service's new Educational and Employability Development Adviser following a cash injection from the Scottish Funding Council.

Her role will involve coming up with innovative approaches to making degree programmes across the University more employer friendly.

Dr Perkins will be based at both the Careers Service and the Centre for Learning and Teaching.

"We are delighted to welcome Joy on board," said Peter Fantom, Head of the Careers Service. "We are working hard towards embedding the promotion of employability in the academic curriculum, and part of Joy's responsibilities will include working closely with Course and Programme Co-ordinators, as well as employers, to this end."

Dr Perkins has taught in Higher Education for 13 years and has extensive experience of student skill development and embedding work-based learning in the curriculum.

In order to promote employability awareness to all new students, the Careers Service has also launched an online employability crossword competition sponsored by local firm Commercial Microbiology Ltd.

Completing the crossword automatically gives participants entry into a prize draw, and an opportunity to win one of many cash prizes. First prize is £200, second prize £100, third prize £50 and there are a number of cash runner-up prizes.

The draw ends on October 2.

"Completing the competition will provide students with an introduction to the concept of employability and is an ideal opportunity for winning students to boost their CVs," added Dr Perkins.
