The University of Aberdeen has been chosen as the destination for an international conference on Chaos Theory which kicks off in the city next week (September 17-21, 2007).
The five-day event has been organised to celebrate the 60th birthday of Professor Celso Grebogi, one of the world's internationally renowned scientists, who has carried out extensive work in the field of chaotic dynamics.
Around 200 professors and researchers from around the globe will be attending this month's conference, from as far afield as the United States, Australia and China. All participants will actively discuss cutting-edge science and the University is delighted to be attracting these outstanding scientists.
Professor Celso Grebogi, Sixth Century Chair in Nonlinear and Complex Systems at the University, has a universal reputation in the field of chaotic dynamical systems. Previously with the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, as Professor of Physics, and, before that, with the University of Maryland as Professor of Mathematics, Professor Grebogi joined the University of Aberdeen at the end of 2005, as Professor of Nonlinear and Complex Systems.
There have been several conferences in the subject area of chaos theory, but this unique event is essentially a one-off. This prestigious conference is particularly unusual as it is celebrating Professor Grebogi's birthday, and the delegates attending are leading professors in their field.

The aim of the conference is to gather world-leading scientists and mathematicians working in the field of Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos to discuss the latest developments. Cutting-edge aspects of Nonlinear Dynamics research, ranging from theoretical to applied problems will also be addressed.
Professor Grebogi's research at the University in chaotic dynamical systems combines analytical methods and techniques with extensive computer-based experiments. He has made an enormous international impact with his seminal work in the area of chaotic control.
His scientific accomplishments include over 300 publications and the delivery of more than 300 invited lectures at international conferences and at universities and other institutions. In addition he has received many awards and prizes, along with other distinctions. Among them, he was recipient of the Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Potsdam, awarded the Senior Humboldt Prize, the Fulbright Fellowship, and the University of Maryland Distinguished Faculty Award and the Toshiba Chair at Waseda University. He is an External Scientific Director of a Max-Planck Institute, Fellow of the American Physical Society, Fellow of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World and Full Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences.
With over 12,000 citations (Science Citation Index), he is listed as a Highly Cited Researcher by ISI Web of Knowledge.
