The University of Aberdeen has once again demonstrated that it is a rising star among the ranks of UK universities.
Aberdeen, the UK's fifth oldest university with a distinguished track record in education and research, has risen to an overall position of 32 in The Times Good University Guide to the UK's 113 universities.
This is a rise from 36th place last year.
In addition to being ranked 2nd in the UK for Law and Sociology, Aberdeen was also ranked 1st for Education, with a number of subjects gaining top ten places, including Engineering and Medicine.
Welcoming this acknowledgement of the quality of teaching, research, and student experience Professor Stephen Logan, Senior Vice-Principal, said: "League tables should always be treated with a degree of caution, but this news from The Times Good University Guide is entirely consistent with other recent ratings that show our rising position in terms of UK universities, and indeed throughout the world. This is an acknowledgement of the quality, skills and inspiring leadership of our staff and our whole University community.
"Over recent years we have made an unprecedented £9m investment in our intellectual leadership, attracting internationally renowned professors from many of the world's most prestigious universities. This in turn is drawing ambitious students from around the world, and these latest rankings indicate that the academic quality of the students coming to Aberdeen is equal to the top ten universities in the UK.
"Our exciting programme to create a world–class campus - centred on a magnificent new library - will help ensure that we continue to secure the most talented students and academic leaders, and give them the quality of environment in which great teaching and learning will flourish. Our target is to be counted firmly among the top hundred universities in the world."
Applications for undergraduate admissions to the University have risen this year with more than 15,300 applications received for 2007 entry – the highest number ever recorded.
