UrbanAlphabet – new art exhibition exploring connections between the city and words

Four talented Scottish artists will soon come together in a new exhibition, exploring the relationship between words and the city landscape, as part of a joint venture between Word – the University of Aberdeen Writers Festival – and Grampian Hospitals Art Trust (GHAT).

Opening on Thursday April 19 at 6:00pm, the exhibition will feature North-East artists - Susan Grant, Stuart Johnstone, Ruth Maxwell and David Pettigrew, all of whom were invited by GHAT to investigate their urban environment using a variety of digital technologies.

The resulting exhibition features fascinating photographic images and examines how shops, street names, graffiti, signs and games can stir memories of emotions and life experiences.

Fiona Christie, Festival Producer of Word 07, said: "We are delighted to be working with the Grampian Hospitals Art Trust, once again, to present some of the North-East's most respected artists as part of this year's Word Festival. The exhibition brilliantly combines art with the written word, and collaborations such as this continue to make Word one of the most exciting festivals in the UK."

The exhibition will take place in the unique Art Gallery at the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. This space allows GHAT to bring a diverse range of exciting exhibitions to a wide variety of people in the heart of the hospital community.

Anne Moore, Curator, Grampian Hospitals Art Trust, said: "The exhibitions are an extremely important part of the hospital, not only for patients and their visitors, but also for the people that work there everyday. Being involved in community projects outwith the hospital and festivals such as Word, complements the work which we continue to do in using art for the benefit of patients, staff and visitors in NHS Grampian healthcare spaces."

The UrbanAlphabet exhibition at The Art Gallery, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, runs from Friday, April 20, until Sunday, June 3, 2007.
