Oil industry conference looks to the future

The 14th Oil Overview Conference will be held this week at the University of Aberdeen for those seeking a greater understanding of the offshore industry.

And, this year the University is looking to the future by hosting an additional day looking at the direction the Renewable Energy Industry is now taking.

This event is being organised by key industry specialists who are experts in their respective fields. Senior representatives of some of the major operating and service companies, academia, and trade associations will be bringing their knowledge to the event and will put into context the future sustainability of the industry.

John Wils, who is chairing the oil overview section at the event said: "For the past 10 years this unique annual event has provided non-technical professionals and those in support roles with the opportunity to learn from experienced managers of various disciplines.

"This is an excellent opportunity for delegates to participate in sustaining the industry whilst our energy needs are progressively replaced by alternative energy sources. The introduction of a third day which is being presented by leaders in renewable energy supplies, further demonstrates this essential progression."

Iain Todd, Renewables Champion with Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group (AREG), who is chairing the renewables energy day, said: "The addition of a renewables day to the long-established 'Introduction to oil and gas' makes this an unmissable event for anyone wishing to get in touch with the important issues facing the energy sector today. Speakers on renewables will be covering the policies, the technologies, and the business opportunities in a sector which is growing at remarkable rate, and is seldom out of the news."

The conference aims to give a basic understanding of the:

·  technical stages from exploration to decommissioning within the upstream Oil and Gas Industry (Day 1)

·  regulatory and business environment issues affecting the Oil and Gas Industry (Day 2)

·  technical, regulatory and business environment issues affecting the Renewable Energy Industry (Day 3)

The conference will take place at the King's College Centre, University of Aberdeen, from Tuesday 3 to Thursday 5 April, 2007.  Further information is available on the web at: www.abdn.ac.uk/energyoverview
