Deep within the stores of the University of Aberdeen’s Marischal Museum have lain several beautiful black pots, originally from Peru and dating back 800 years. Very little has been known about them.
Undaunted by this, thirteen budding Indiana Jones set about researching the pots. What the members of YoungArchaeologists@Aberdeen uncovered is now on display in a fascinating new exhibition at Marischal Museum.
The exquisite pots were produced by the Chimu, an ancient Peruvian civilisation, who existed between c.1100-1500AD. They were a very advanced society and the pots on show give us a small glimpse into their lives and culture.
Claire Smith, YoungArchaeologists Club Leader and Curator (Scientific Collections) at Marischal Museum, said: "It has been a very exciting project for us and it is fantastic that the hard work that the children put into researching the pots can be enjoyed by everyone. This is the first time the pots now on show have been seen in decades."
The exhibition runs at Marischal Museum from February until April 2007. Marischal Museum is located in Marischal College in the centre of Aberdeen. The museum is open Monday to Friday, 10am – 5pm and Sunday 2pm – 5pm. Entry to the museum is free.
