The University of Aberdeen has reaffirmed its commitment to become a Higher Education Institution recognised for its good practice in the area of Disability Equality.
The Institution has today (Monday, December 4) published its Disability Equality Scheme, which explains the current position of the University in relation to Disability Equality and sets out an action plan for further improvements. The Scheme is required under the Disability Equality Duty.
The involvement of disabled people, through the University’s Disability Advisory Group, was central to the preparation of the Scheme.
Anne Begg, MP, who chaired the Disability Advisory Group, said: "I am very pleased to see the University of Aberdeen showing such commitment in taking its new "Disability Duty" so seriously.
“The work they are doing will promote equality of opportunity for students and staff with disabilities, assisting both in realising their full potential. The new Disability Duty puts obligations on public bodies to promote positive attitudes towards disabled people and to encourage their participation in public life. The University of Aberdeen is now very well placed to deliver this obligation."
The full scheme can be accessed at http://www.abdn.ac.uk/central/disabilities/equality_scheme/
The University is keen to receive further input and feedback, particularly from disabled people and disability-related organisations. Any queries or feedback should be sent to Dr Lucy Foley, Senior Disability Adviser, at disability.equality@abdn.ac.uk or 01224 273935.
The Scheme can also be requested in alternative formats.
