If cars are looking a lot cleaner in Old Aberdeen over the next two days, it’s because University staff are doing their bit for the environment.
This Wednesday is National Liftshare Day and the University of Aberdeen is offering a free car wash to those who have registered to share their car journey that day.
Bubblewash – a mobile valet service – will be on campus today and Wednesday ensuring environmentally friendly participants head home in gleaming motors.
Clair Wright, Travel Plan Co-ordinator for the University, said: “National Liftshare Day is designed to try to encourage more people to car share and cut congestion and carbon dioxide emissions.
“As the University is striving towards becoming an even greener campus we were only too keen to get involved.
“Originally we planned to offer the free car wash on Wednesday to those who have registered to take part in National Liftshare Day.
“However, the idea was so well received, that Bubblewash, the mobile car valet service that is helping us, were booked to capacity. Now we are offering the free car wash Tuesday and Wednesday.”
The venture has the backing of the Rector of the University, Robin Harper. The MSP and Co-Covener of the Scottish Green Party said: “I am delighted that staff are finding fun ways to draw attention to the problem of climate change, coupled with promoting car sharing which could make a significant difference to the number of car journeys that people make to and from and around the University".
* A wide series of measures are being taken by the University to make its campuses more sustainable. These include looking at ways of reducing the number of private vehicles on site. The University’s Environment Office is also working towards reducing the impact the University has on the environment. See:
