Talented music graduates are being given the chance of gaining support to undertake further study at the University of Aberdeen through a new scholarship fund set up by Professor Derek Ogston, a graduate of the University.
The Ogston Postgraduate Music Scholarship provides £1000 per year for three years and will be awarded to a student with outstanding ability aiming to pursue postgraduate studies in any area of music.
Dr Paul Mealor, Lecturer in Music at the University of Aberdeen, said the new scholarship provided an exciting opportunity for talented music graduates. He said: “There has never been a more exciting time to be involved with music at the University of Aberdeen – whether it’s classical, traditional or modern.
“The University of Aberdeen’s annual Music season features a packed programme of recitals and concerts, as well as residencies and visits by leading international artists, orchestras and ensembles, catering for all tastes. This provides the perfect backdrop to developing a career in music.”
Professor Ogston CBE, FRSE is a previous Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and a former Senior Vice-Principal of the University. Over five decades he has gained seven degrees from the University of Aberdeen: in addition to medicine he has included history of art and theology in his studies.
Professor Ogston said that he was delighted to support further development of the vibrant music scene at the University at a postgraduate level. He said: “The performances of the many gifted students, solo, choral and orchestral, have given myself and many others great enjoyment."
Applications for the Ogston Postgraduate Music Scholarship must include a curriculum vitae and at least one example of recent work. All short-listed candidates will be required to attend an interview to discuss their application and proposed programme of research.
The closing date for applications is Thursday, June 15, 2006.
