A host of different cultures from around the world will join together at the University of Aberdeen tomorrow (Tuesday, February 25) for an event that aims to promote cultural awareness in the University and the City.
Organised by AIESEC - the world’s largest student organisation - Global Village is set to welcome an eclectic mix of traditions from eight countries in a bid to showcase the University’s multi-cultural community.
Societies and organisations affiliated with the Aberdeen University Students Association (AUSA) will set up stalls in Elphinstone Hall between 11.00am and 3.00pm. These include the Afri-Carribean Society, Slavic Society, The Christian Union, Shared Planet, Conservation Society, European Society, French Society, Muslim Society, Celtic Society, Amnesty International, Indian Society and the German Society. The event will feature performances from many of these societies as well as performances by the Rock Gospel Choir and Chinese singers.
Event organiser Sarah Koenig (AIESEC Aberdeen) said she hoped this year’s event would continue to attract hundreds of people to the King’s College campus. She said: “Last year’s event was very successful attracting over 400 people.
“We were inspired to organise Global Village for the first time in 2005 when we realised there were no opportunities to unite the University’s groups and societies. We really wanted to do something that would bring all the cultures at the University together for a day of cultural awareness and celebration.”
Students, staff, and members of the general public are invited along to Elphinstone Hall today to browse the stalls and to enjoy the entertainment.
