Marina Lewycka, appearing at this year's Word Festival in Aberdeen was named Waterstones Newcomer of the year at last week's British Book Awards.
Beating off stiff competition, Marina Lewyckas debut novel 'A Short History of Tractors in Ukranian', which was mistakenly filed in agriculture sections on its release, is a dark, funny novel about two sisters and their attempts to scotch their widowed father's plans to remarry a bosomy young gold-digger from the Ukraine.
Now a runaway best-seller 'Tractors in Ukranian' has seen Lewycka make several big prize lists with this her debut novel, including scooping the Bollinger Prize for best comic novel in 2005.
Marina Lewycka will be appearing at the Word Festival with Jane Harris, whose debut novel The Observations, set in 1800s Scotland promises to be one of this year's hottest literary debuts.
The festival, now in its sixth year is hosted by the University of Aberdeen and promises to be the biggest literary event the North-east has ever seen.
Elly Rothnie, Festival Producer, said: “We are delighted for Marina - a very worthy winner. Tickets for her event are already being snapped up quickly and this award will make her one of the hottest tickets at this year’s Word Festival.”
