Students bring karaoke culture of Hong Kong to Aberdeen

A group of students at the University of Aberdeen are set to bring the culture of Hong Kong to the Granite City when they hold a special evening of entertainment next month.

The Hong Kong and Cantonese Association, one of 87 societies linked with the Aberdeen University Students’ Association (AUSA), will hold The Aberdeen Singing Contest on Sunday, March 5, at the Copthorne Hotel.

The event has been organised to promote Hong Kong youth culture and to give the people of Aberdeen a flavour of entertainment in Hong Kong - with karaoke being the hobby of choice for the majority of youngsters.

Jacqueline Tang, President of the Hong Kong and Cantonese Association, and a fourth year medical student at the University of Aberdeen, said: “Hong Kong is a place full of entertainment and fun and the young people especially love to sing karaoke in their free time whether it’s during a lunch hour, at tea-time, or even an all night karaoke!

“We would encourage anyone who enjoys karaoke singing and would like to see how it’s done in Hong Kong to come along to our event on March 5. We want to promote Hong Kong and to share the fun of it with the people of Aberdeen.”

As well as a great night of singing, guests will be served a three-course dinner, followed by a prize presentation to the winners.

“The event is set to be a thrilling experience and we’re urging budding singers to come and show us how good they can sing!” added Jacqueline.

Every 1p from every pound from the event will go to Oxfam.

The event will run from 5.30pm – 11.00pm, at the Copthorne Hotel, 122 Huntly Street, Aberdeen. The evening is priced at £16 for contestants, which is limited to 20 contestants on a first-come first-served basis, and £17 for guests.
