Around 50 nursery children will tomorrow (Fri Jan 27) find out about birds at the University of Aberdeen.
The Feed the Birds events are part of the Nature Tots series, which is being run by the University's Natural History Centre. Nursery children and their parents will find out all about birds through hands-on activities, which have been specially designed for this age group.
The events coincide with the RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch, that takes place over this coming Saturday and Sunday.
Mandy Tulloch, Development Co-ordinator at the Natural History Centre, said: "Birds are a great way to get kids involved in nature. The children are going to have fun finding out all about them by having a hands-on look at our bird specimens, from ostrich eggs to beautiful tawny owls."
"We'll also be making some delicious bird food for the children to take home for the birds and to have fun over the Big Garden Birdwatch weekend."
In addition to these activities, biology students will be giving the children a close encounter with some live garden birds in the Cruickshank Botanic Garden's Arboretum, through a demonstration on bird ringing.
Nature Tots is a monthly series of environmental sessions for children not yet at school. This programme of activities for two to five-year-olds and their parents has been specifically designed to inspire them about environment and natural history. It aims to allow children to explore subjects not always available to them at home. Caring for and respect towards the environment also feature prominently within each session.
