Insight into oil and gas sector

The challenges facing the UK offshore oil and gas industry will be outlined at a two-day annual event taking place at the University of Aberdeen in the New Year.

Key industry figures are participating in the 12th Overview of the North Sea Oil and Gas Industry which is aimed at a mainly non-specialist audience. The event has been hailed by past delegates for providing an excellent understanding of the sector which, in turn, has given participants a greater insight into their clients’ needs.

Previous events have attracted many from the finance sector, as well as marketing managers, corporate communications executives, senior recruitment consultants, information systems analysts, administrative personnel, lawyers and personnel officers.

Professor John Wils, formerly Director of Operations and Technical Affairs for the United Kingdom Offshore Operators Association, is chairing the event which takes place on January 26 and 27.

He said: “The upstream oil and gas industry can seem complex to people in support roles and non-technical professionals who wish to contribute to the success of their organisation or team.

“This two day training event will provide participants with a broad understanding of the industry which will give them greater confidence to participate and contribute in discussions and meetings. It could also help progress their careers.”

Speakers include Alex Kemp, Professor of Petroleum Economics at the University of Aberdeen, who will give an economic assessment of North Sea prospects. Oil geologist Stuart Archer, currently researching at the University will outline how geologists assess possible oil and gas prospects.

Representatives from the Health and Safety Executive, UKOOA and the Department of Trade and Industry will give talks, as will participants from companies which include Shell, BP and Maersk Contractors.

Professor Wils, who has more than 30 years’ oil and gas experience, added: “Opportunities for UK businesses to participate in the UK oil and gas industry can often be restricted due to a limited understanding as to how the industry operates.

“This two day event will provide those, who wish to get a foothold into business opportunities with the oil and gas industry, with a broad understanding of the industry.“
