The University of Aberdeen is exhibiting at Offshore Europe 2005 as partner organisation to Aberdeen City Council, and Aberdeenshire Council. This relationship builds on the synergy being developed through the City’s Energy Futures programme, and other joint initiatives being pursued by the University with both Councils. The University’s efforts to boost technology transfer into the economy of the north-east of Scotland complements the economic initiatives in both Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire.
Situated at the heart of Europe’s Energy capital, the University has a long-established reputation in petroleum economics, engineering, industrial health and safety management, petroleum geology, deep sea and environmental monitoring, law and business management.
The offshore industry has called upon the University as a centre of research excellence since the early days of exploration in the hostile environment of the North Sea. It is, however, now at the centre of Aberdeen City’s push to make the City a world centre for renewable energy and is one of the founding members of the Aberdeen Renewables Energy Group (AREG).
Professor Paul Mitchell, Director of the College’s Institute for Energy Technologies, is also one of the Directors of AREG, which promotes Aberdeen as a global energy capital and seeks to build on the extensive knowledge base that the City possesses from its work on oil and gas. Professor Mitchell is also directing research activity within the College of Physical Sciences on the renewable energy agenda - which the University will also be highlighting at this year’s conference, along with oil and gas, petroleum geology, as well as decommissioning.
Professor Mitchell said: “The University of Aberdeen has had a good relationship with the oil and gas industry since the North Sea first took off. We are embedded in the community so that incoming companies know about us very quickly. Most already know of our reputation.”
The University has exhibited at the Offshore Europe Exhibition every year since 1994. From major research on the secrets of the deepest oceans to the latest teaching on global economics, the University of Aberdeen thrives on developing solutions, which will boost the sustainability and competitiveness of the energy sector.
