Students flock to Granite City for University Applicant Day

The distinctive qualities that make the Granite City an attractive place to study will be showcased next month when the University of Aberdeen hosts its fifth annual MA Applicant Day.

Upwards of 300 students and 250 parents will descend on historic King’s College campus next month to enjoy the activity-filled day of guided tours, workshops, and subject presentations.

Professor Trevor Salmon, Director of Teaching and Learning, University of Aberdeen, said: “The University offers a broad and flexible MA degree that continues to be attractive to prospective students from all over the world. The structure of the MA programme allows students to study other subjects in first and second year, which makes the MA Applicant Day an ideal resource for potential students to explore a range of areas.”

The University is at the forefront in many areas of arts and social sciences, and the latest figures released by the Universities and College Admissions Services (UCAS) reveal that the highest ever number of students have applied to study at Aberdeen this year.

The University has also experienced an increase in applications to the Master of Arts (MA) programme, with figures up by seven per cent compared with January 2004.

The marked improvement in applicant figures can be attributed to a number of factors, including the fact that Aberdeen – as Scotland’s third largest city – is a place with a lively combination of historic charm, thriving economy and cosmopolitan community.

Professor Salmon added: “With the population approaching 250,000, Aberdeen is big enough to provide all the advantages of city life, yet compact enough to enjoy the more intimate atmosphere usually associated with small towns.

“The University is the third oldest in Scotland. This year the University celebrates its 500th anniversary of teaching at King’s College, and still offers a sense of history in the daily life of a university, although now focussed on the needs of the new millennium.”

The University recently launched a £9million investment programme to ensure that the Institution maintains its position as one of Britain’s leading research-led universities and that Aberdeen remains one of the strongest research communities in the UK.
