Gaelic choir perform concert

University staff and students are among members of Aberdeen's Gaelic Choir (Còisir Gàidhlig Obar Dheathain) performing in a free concert on Thursday April 6 in the beautiful Cowdray hall next to the Aberdeen Art Gallery.

The lunchtime event, running from 12.45pm to 1.15pm, will feature a range of traditional and modern Gaelic songs performed by the award-winning choir, under the direction of conductor and Gaelic Tutor Kerrie Kennedy and assistant conductor Finlay Morse – a University student.

Aberdeen Gaelic Choir has been running for more than 70 years and enjoyed success at the Royal National Mod in 2019 and has won prizes for exceptional Gaelic and music skills in the choral puirt-a-beul (mouth music) competition.

Carola Maccallum, a choir member and the University’s new Gaelic Language Development Officer, said: “The beautiful melodies of our Gaelic songs have been a feature of Scotland’s culture for centuries”.

“It doesn’t matter whether you speak Gaelic – or whether you have ever been to a Gaelic concert before – this is a great opportunity to hear Gaelic music for the very first time.

“We are delighted to be able to share our enjoyment of Gaelic song through this concert.”

Contributions towards the concert are welcome but not required.

Còisir Ghàidhlig Obar Dheathain a’ cluich cuirm-chiùil

Bidh luchd-obrach agus oileanaich an Oilthigh nam pàirt de Chòisir Ghàidhlig Obar Dheathain a bhios a’ cluich ann an cuirm-chiùil air Diardaoin 6mh den Ghiblean anns an talla Cowdray ri taobh Gaileraidh Ealain Obar Dheathain.

Bidh an tachartas a’ ruith bho 12.45f gu 1.15f agus bidh an Còisir a’ seinn measgachadh de dh’òrain, co-aimsireil ragus traidiseanta fo stiùradh an stiùiriche-ciùil Cearaidh Ceanadach agus leas-stiùiriche Fionnlagh Mac An Fhùcadair – oileanach aig an oilthigh againn.

Chaidh a’ chòisir a stèidheachadh ann an 1952 agus tha iad air soirbheadhail feadh nam bliadhnaichean agus bhuannaich iad fairpais Puirt a Beul aig a’ Mhòd Nàiseamta Rìoghail ann an Glaschu ann an 2019.

Thuirt Caròla NicCaluim, an t-Oifigear Leasachaidh Gàidhlig ùr againn, “Tha binneas nan òran Ghàidhlig air a bhith nam pàirt de chultar na h-Alba airson linntean”.

“Chan eil e gu diofar a bheil Gàidhlig agaibh, no a bheil sibh air a bhith aig cuirm-chiùil Ghàidhlig a-riamh roimhe – ’S e deagh chothrom a tha seo ceòl Gàidhlig a chluinntinn airson a’ chiad uair.”

“Tha sinn air leth toilichte gun urrainn dhuinn an tlachd againn air òrain Ghàidhlig a roinn ribh aig a’ chuirm chiùil.”

Tha fàilte air tabhartasan airson na cuirm-chiùil ach chan eil feum air.
