PIL Centre kicks of a series of events on Restatement of Scots Private International Law

On Thursday 25 August 2022, our Centre for Private International Law kicked off a series of workshops on a Restatement of Scots Private International Law, funded by the Royal Society of Edinburgh. The first workshop was held at the University of Dundee, and benefited from the participation of experts from academia and the profession: Aude Fiorini (University of Dundee), Prof Barry Rodger (University of Strathclyde), Dr David Hill (Robert Gordon University), Prof Gerry Maher QC (University of Edinburgh), Francesca Farrington (University of Aberdeen), Prof Janeen Carruthers (University of Glasgow), Prof Justin Borg-Barthet (University of Aberdeen), Dr Katarina Trimmings (University of Aberdeen), Dr Kirsty Hood QC (Faculty of Advocates), Dr Lorna Gillies (Edinburgh Napier University), Dr Michiel Poesen (University of Aberdeen), Dr Onyója Momoh (University of Aberdeen), Dr Patricia Živković (University of Aberdeen), Prof Verónica Ruiz Abou-Nigm (University of Edinburgh). The workshop sought to diagnose the current state of Scots private international law with a view to informing future legislative interventions. Participants considered rules on jurisdiction, choice of law, and recognition of judgments in civil matters, international family law, intra-UK conflicts, and arbitration. Our next workshops will develop discussion further by considering the interactions of Scots private international law with other legal systems, as well as assessing the experience of recent codifications of private international law.
