Fully-funded ESRC PhD Studentship (3 years)

Fully-funded ESRC PhD Studentship (3 years)

Starting autumn 2012 at University of Aberdeen Business School. Research theme: Understanding neighbourhood effects - An analysis of Aberdeen Housing Sub-Markets

Application deadline is the 16th of July, interviews will be held after the 23rd of July. Applicants should have a minimum 2:1 class undergraduate degree in a subject such as economics, applied statistics, real estate, or geography. Applicants from other subjects with research-relevant skills can also be considered. An MSc or research experience will be an advantage.

The successful candidate will receive a stipend (currently £13,590 per annum tax-free), full coverage of University tuition fees, and an additional Research Training Support Grant (£2000 per annum). The studentship is part of the Scottish Graduate School in Social Science Doctoral Training Centre (SGSSS DTC) and the student is eligible for all training courses provided by the SGSSS DTC.

The collaborative partner for the research is the Aberdeen Solicitor’s Property Centre Limited. The partner provides transaction data and the PhD candidate is expected to work with the partner throughout the year. The research will combine partner’s data with geo-information and other market information. The PhD will develop statistical methods to separate location values from structural characteristics of properties. The estimated location values will then be analysed spatially and over time. The project will contribute to a better understanding of the conceptualisation, measurement and valuation of neighbourhood effects and the way these influence the operation of local housing markets. While the focus of the empirical analysis is on Aberdeen, the methodological outcomes should have general applicability.

The research will be supervised by a team comprising Dr Deborah Roberts and Dr Rainer Schulz from the University of Aberdeen Business School, and Mr John MacRae, Chairman of the Aberdeen Solicitor’s Property Centre. For further information on the research theme, please contact either Dr Deb Roberts (deb.roberts@abdn.ac.uk) or Dr Rainer Schulz (r.schulz@abdn.ac.uk).

If you want to apply for the studentship, first contact Dr Deb Roberts and Dr Rainer Schulz. You are also required to complete the application form for doctoral study (PhD programme) in the University of Aberdeen Business School (http://www.abdn.ac.uk/postgraduate/apply.php) and submit the form to the Registry.
