CEFAW Education: now recruiting teachers, schools and TEI staff

The Christian Ethics of Farmed Animal Welfare project (CEFAW) has received funding from the AHRC for a new one-year project to work with teachers, schools, and academic staff at Theological Education Institutions (TEIs) to develop educational resources based on the project’s cutting-edge academic research.

The CEFAW Education project will run for one year from January 2022. We are now looking for teachers, schools, and TEI staff who would be interested in working with us to learn about our research, consider how it relates to current teaching and wider institutional practices, develop new educational resources, and work with our project partners to make them available to other educators.

The project will:

  • work with a cohort of 10 RE teachers to develop new teaching resources on the link between Christianity and farmed animal welfare;
  • work with a pilot group of 8 schools to consider how the project might inform wider aspects of school practice, such as assemblies, catering, or contact with local farms;
  • work with a group of 3 TEI staff to develop new teaching resources related to the project aligned to the Common Awards curriculum.

CEFAW participants will join monthly online meetings with the research team, attend a two-day residential in Chester including a farm site visit, and have the opportunity to present their work to peers at conferences.

For teachers, the project will provide schools with two days of funding for supply cover and pay for travel and accommodation for the residential. Three teachers will be able to take up a Farmington Scholarship extending the supply cover to 30 days. There will also be the possibility of gaining MA module credit for work on the project, with the opportunity to apply for financial support from Culham St Gabriel’s Trust.

For schools, the project will allow a nominated staff member to develop an action plan related to the school’s particular context, get help in developing relevant resources, and be featured in a case study disseminated to other schools.

For TEI staff, the project will provide your TEI with funding to release you from a 10-credit module or equivalent to give you time to work on the project.

Teachers, school representatives, and TEI staff will also be able to apply for funding to attend conferences to encourage the dissemination of project resources.

CEFAW is delighted to be working with a wide range of partners ideally placed to support project participants: the AQA examination board, Chester Diocesan Board of Education, the Common Awards Partnership, Culham St Gabriel’s Trust, the Farmington Institute, NATRE, the Department for Education for the Catholic Diocese of Salford, and The Saltley Trust.
