Work your muscles for metabolism

Work your muscles for metabolism

Research carried out by scientists at the University of Aberdeen's Rowett Institute finds that exercise may help patients with metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes.

Dr Brendan Gabriel leads research focussing on skeletal muscle as a target for obesity and metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes.  Muscles respond well to exercise and so could be an important consideration for disease progression of these diseases.

In a new blog on the Rowett Institute website, Dr Gabriel highlights his research in this area. In a paper published in February 2021, he shows that while exercise is a powerful intervention for some metabolic diseases, the time of day that physical activity takes place can affect the associated benefit.

Dr Gabriel discusses further that the circadian rhythms within the skeletal muscles of patients with type 2 diabetes are disrupted, further suggesting that it is important to consider the time of day that exercise takes place for maximum benefit to these patients.
