Krzys Adamczyk, an ESRC doctoral researcher in Sociology, has appeared on BBC Scotland's Class Wars.
Hosted by Darren McGarvey, the four part series looks at how class shapes different facets of our daily lives, including our identities, where we live, power, and the long-term impact of social class on our lives.
Given its scope, the series enabled Krzys to draw on his expertise, built through his doctoral studies, which focuses on how people understand, experience and evaluate upward social mobility.
Drawing on the Aberdeen Children of the 1950s cohort study, Krzys evaluates the effect of social mobility trajectories on their wellbeing, a point that he touched on during the series.
"When I was embarking on my higher education journey over a decade ago, social class as a topic seemed to be at the bottom of the hierarchy of intellectuals objects.
Things have changed dramatically since then, but there is still a certain unease about class both in the public and academic discourses.
Talking about my work in Darren McGarvey’s Class Wars has a particular relevance to me as an academic from a working class background studying class transitions.
It’s been a fantastic opportunity to get a few points across from my PhD research to a national audience, and have my research participants contribute and showcase a wonderful study that we have here at Aberdeen University – the Aberdeen Children of the 1950s cohort."
