Dr Gearoid Millar to Deliver Paper at the University of Hamburg

Dr Gearoid Millar will deliver a paper later this week at the online workshop, Studying Everyday Order and Peace from the Ground up: An Interregional and Interdisciplinary Dialogue on Peace Formation in Central Eurasia, convened by the Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy at the University of Hamburg and the German Foundation for Peace Research.

The inter-regional and interdisciplinary workshop, which takes place between October 8-9, will include regional experts from Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan, and thematic experts on local peacebuilding who will share their perspectives on communal agency for conflict settlement, de-escalation and peace formation.

In the second part of the event, Dr Millar will deliver his paper, 'Structure, Culture, and Conflict: The Shaping of Violence and Peace', in which he will focus on the relationship between culture and conflict, which he argues has been less acknowledged in post-conflict peacebuilding literature.

This omission also problematically limits our ability to conceive of, study, and understand the role culture plays in the dynamics of and recovery from violent conflict and greatly undermines our ability then to develop credible locally salient peacebuilding processes.

Closing the event, a final discussion will consider the chances and limitations of interdisciplinary and interregional peace studies to date, and propose new paths.
