University offers £80,000 worth of AI scholarships

The University of Aberdeen is offering eight scholarships for its MSc in Artificial Intelligence (AI), worth a combined £80,000.

The scholarships, worth £10,000 each, are available to pay tuition fees for the degree programme, which aims to cater for the need for AI-literate workers in a range of industries.

The scholarships are part-funded by The Data Lab, a Scottish innovation centre, along with the Scottish Funding Council and the European Social Fund.  They are available for applicants for the programme starting this September.

While AI is a broad field, the degree aims to familiarise students with those technologies most sought after in business, covering areas including:

  • Big data Analytics
  • Data science
  • Machine learning
  • AI for decision support
  • Natural Language Processing

The MSc in Artificial Intelligence was designed with input from an advisory board including companies such as Intelligent Plant, Arria NLG and public sector bodies including Aberdeen City Council.

Students on the programme will be taught using a mix of coursework and individual and group projects, solving real-world problems relevant to businesses and organisations. Students will also be able to apply their skills via industrial placements organised through organisations including the Intel AI Academy and IBM.

Dr George Leontidis, Programme Coordinator, said: “Even though Artificial Intelligence is an ever-growing area, there remains a skills shortage in the field which means that graduates are highly sought after.

“Our programme provides organisations with a fresh pool of talent allowing them to shape their workforce in preparation for the next digital revolution, and our graduates have gone on to embark on careers in a range of industries where their skills are in high demand.

“Our close partnership with The Data Lab and our industrial advisory board ensures that this new degree is directly relevant to industry, and since its launch a few years ago it has unlocked a new stream of talent here in the North East of Scotland.”
