Arctic Policy - Scottish Executive Internship for Students

Application deadline Monday, 24 February 2020. Students sought with research interests that will inform the implementation of the Scottish Government's first Arctic policy framework.

Based in the Directorate for External Affairs, the timing of this internship will be agreed with the successful candidate, but ideally from April to June 2020. 

This research relates to the analysis of Arctic strategies produced by other countries, regions and organisations to map opportunities for the Scottish Government (including its external network of offices) with the aim of collaborating with international stakeholders to deliver Arctic Connections commitments (Scotland’s first Arctic Policy Framework), which seeks to promote new knowledge and policy exchanges between Scotland and Arctic countries across a variety of fields, from higher education and energy solutions to sustainable tourism and the blue economy.

Objectives: 

  • Develop a report on international Arctic strategies, drawing out top priorities, key themes as  well as policy commitments.
  • Provide analytical support to inform the selection of policy priorities and identification of key stakeholders as part of the implementation of Arctic Connections.
  • Gather and review data to map international and domestic responses to Scotland’s Arctic work.

Essential requirements:

  • Analysis and use of evidence - gathering and distillation of wide range of evidence from within and outside government, including academic analyses.
  • Flexibility – ability to respond quickly to various requests which may require further work to define.
  • Strong communication and engagement skills – to understand and clarify the requirements of colleagues, to source relevant information efficiently and to be able to write concise reports and briefing papers for a non-academic audience.
  • Qualitative analysis skills
  • Good range of IT skills

The Scottish Government’s European Engagement Team seeks students interested in carrying out research and the review of literature that will inform the implementation of the Scottish Government’s first Arctic policy framework.

Students should submit an online application form available on the SGSSS website, which includes space for a statement of support from the student’s principal supervisor, along with a two-page CV. 

Application deadline is 5pm, Monday 24 February 2020.
