Professor Paterson and Dr Yiallourides present at workshop on oil and gas maritime boundaries

In conjunction with the Beirut Bar Association and the American University of Technology - LL.M. Support Program Team the Law School's Centre for Energy Law experts have delivered a second CPD short course for energy professionals in Lebanon.

Last week Professor John Paterson and Dr Constantinos Yiallourides, members of the Aberdeen University Centre for Energy Law (AUCEL) based at the School of Law, University of Aberdeen ran a CPD workshop 'Oil and Gas Maritime Boundaries: a cause of conflict?' The two day workshop was developed in conjunction with the Beirut Bar and the American University of Technology and took place in Beirut on 22nd and 23rd February 2019.

Dr Yiallourides discussed the law relating to international maritime boundaries, presenting case studies on how disputes have been resolved by international courts and tribunals and debating whether joint development agreements can be a solution. These issues are of particular relevance given the current dispute between Lebanon and Israel over block 9 and future delimitations that will require to be carried out.

Professor Paterson discussed the role of Joint Operating Agreements in the oil and gas industry, demonstrating why they are used and what the companies involved are trying to achieve. He then moved on to look at risk allocation in oil and gas contracts more generally and concluded by considering the role farm-out agreements during the exploration phase.
