Brush up your negotiation skills over breakfast

Commercial disputes can be time consuming and expensive to try to sort out via the traditional method of going to court, but what if you already possessed the skills and ability to resolve disputes out of court?

Derek Auchie, Senior Lecturer and dispute resolver from the University of Aberdeen Law School, will host a business breakfast this week (Friday) where he will discuss this topic and the techniques that individuals can use in these situations.

‘Resolving Disputes out of Court’ will take place on Friday, November 2, from 8am – 9.30am in the Craig Suite at the Sir Duncan Rice Library.

Mr Auchie commented: “Negotiation, mediation and arbitration can lead to rapid and cost-effective resolution of even the most complex disputes. I will discuss these processes and techniques at the event this week.

“Negotiation and mediation aren’t just about knowing what to say – it’s about knowing how to talk to people and more importantly, how to handle difficult conversations. It’s also about knowing when to intervene – like any problems, disputes are much easier to resolve if tackled at an early stage.

“There are numerous situations in which having these skills can benefit an organisation financially and in terms of staff and client relations, and individuals can learn and develop these techniques, including in Masters level courses which we offer at the university.”
