University shortlisted for research excellence award

The University of Aberdeen has been shortlisted for a prestigious award in recognition of its excellence in research, in this year's Times Higher Education (THE) Awards.

Each year, THE carries out a detailed analysis of the data it uses to compile its global rankings, and uses this information to compile a shortlist of UK institutions who have excelled in a specific area.

This year’s focus on research performance sees the University included among six UK institutions shortlisted for the THE DataPoints Merit Award, which is based on citations data covering all research published by the University.

The final winner will be announced at the THE Awards in London on November 29th.

Professor Marion Campbell, Vice-Principal for Research, said: “We are absolutely delighted to be shortlisted for the THE DataPoints Merit Award in recognition of our excellence in research.

“The University of Aberdeen is globally recognised as a world class research institution, with innovation at the centre of all our activities.

“Our sustained excellence in health services research was honoured earlier this year when the University won the Queen’s Anniversary Prize – the highest honour a UK University can win.

“Meanwhile, our world leading research on environmental sustainability has led to the development of innovative solutions, such as the Cool Farm Tool, which have been adopted across the globe to help industry manage climate change targets.

“In addition, our multidisciplinary approach to energy-related research is providing solutions that are benefiting industry here in the north-east of Scotland - for example through our partnership with the Oil and Gas Technology Centre to create a National Decommissioning Centre, harnessing our expertise in decommissioning and late life management in oil and gas.”

Professor George Boyne, University of Aberdeen Principal, added: “It is testament to the strength of our academic expertise that the University has been shortlisted for this award, which recognises the quality of our world-class research output across a wide variety of disciplines.”
