Friday 7 September 2018, 13:00-15:00 - UArctic Congress 2018
The 2018 UArctic Congress highlighted themes and priorities set out by Finland for its Chairmanship of the Arctic Council, including education and connectivity - two themes intrinsically linked to the Arctic #UArcticCongress2018
Over the course of time, a number of Arctic-related university courses and educational materials have been successfully developed in Finland, Russia and the UK to equip experts with skills and knowledge of particular relevance to the Arctic region #UKinArctic
Today there remains a growing demand for higher education models that deliver educational excellence to young people who live in the North, often remotely from large education hubs.
The workshop was organised by the UK Science and Innovation Networks in Russia and Finland in partnership with the University of the Arctic and the Northern (Arctic) Federal University (Arkhangelsk, Russia). It brought together leading experts in Arctic-related education from UK, Finnish and Russian universities.
The workshop focussed on the exchange of best practices in delivering Arctic-related education and accommodated discussion that:
- Identified promising areas/themes/projects for potential UK-Finland-Russia collaboration in the development of relevant courses and educational materials
- Discussed tools and mechanisms (i.e. online learning, operations on a distributed basis) to help share and implement best practices in Arctic education across the university network;
- Set out next steps/initiatives to enable future joint work
