Prestigious Award for Chemistry Professor

The achievements of a long-serving member of the University's academic community have been recognised with a prestigious award from an international professional body.

Professor Fredrik Glasser has been presented with the Hume Rothery Award by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, the professional organisation that encompasses the entire range of materials and engineering from minerals processing and primary metals production to basic research and the advanced applications of materials.

Professor Glasser was honoured for his achievements in advancing the application of thermodynamics to the science of metals and substances of interest to metallurgists.

Professor Russell Howe, Head of the University’s School of Chemistry welcomed the recognition of his colleague’s contribution, saying: “Fred Glasser has been a member of the University of Aberdeen Chemistry Department for more than 40 years. We are delighted to see his internationally leading work on phase relationships in cementitious materials recognised by the Institute for Materials, Metallurgy and Mining with the Hume Rothery Prize.”

The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining proved international forums for the exchange of information, promotes technology transfer; and the education and development of current and future professionals, represents the profession in the accreditation of educational programs and in the registration of professional engineers, encourages professionalism, ethical behaviour, and concern for the environment, and stimulates a worldwide sense of unity in the profession.

This is the second award this year to Professor Glasser. In July he received the first Jose Calleja Award of the Calleja Foundation in Madrid.
