Barrow Landscapes: Commemorating the Dead in Early Medieval Scotland

Juliette Mitchell will give an evening lecture in association with the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland at Aberdeen University on 13 March, 7.30pm to 8.30pm. All Welcome - FREE event.

  • Juliette Mitchell is an AHRC-funded PhD researcher in Archaeology who graduated with an MA in History from the University of Glasgow.
  • Her talk will be held in the Regent Lecture Theatre at Aberdeen University, Scotland.

Juliette's work focuses on the monumental burials of early medieval Scotland, exploring their landscape settings and considering how they reflect social transformation in the first millennium AD.

While working as a Project Manager in a Stirling-based GIS company, she developed her interest in archaeology through community and research digs. This led her to undertake an MSc in Archaeology of the North at the University of Aberdeen, from which she graduated with distinction in 2014. For her master’s thesis she carried out research into the barrow cemeteries of north-east Scotland, and the results of that work form the basis of a recent publication in Medieval Archaeology.
