Increase in phishing emails

We have identified an increase in the number of phishing emails sent to students and staff accounts.
These "SPAM" or "phishing" emails are designed to trick you into giving away your password.

What is happening?

We have identified an increase in the number of phishing emails sent to students and staff accounts.

Be alert to fake emails telling you that something is wrong with your IT account or that you have important information awaiting and you must click on a link. These “SPAM” or “phishing” emails are designed to trick you into giving away your password.

If in any doubt, do not click on any links or attachments that you are not expecting, even if from a known source. Please remain vigilant and cautious with all the emails you receive.

If you are in any way concerned about an email you have received please contact the IT Service Desk.

What happens if you have been tricked or deceived?

Your personal details are at risk, and your IT account may be used to send further fake emails. IT services will be informed of this by our email service provider. We will block your ability to send email, and we will also change your IT account password to stop any unauthorised access to the account. This is to protect your data.

You will find more information on IT security on the University Website - https://www.abdn.ac.uk/staffnet/working-here/it-security.php.

Remember that the University of Aberdeen IT Services will *never* ask you for your password.
