New article by History of Art's John Gash

John Gash’s latest article on one of Caravaggio’s followers, Andrea Ristro, “pittore maltese”, was  published (in English!) in At Home in Art, ed. Charlene Vella (Midsea Books, Malta), in December 2016. It is part of a volume of essays presented to leading Maltese art historian, Mario Buhagiar, and breaks new ground in using archival material from the Archivio di Stato, Rome, to reconstruct the identity, and part of the biography, of an elusive Maltese painter, Andrea Ristro, who was an assistant in Rome to the prominent early seventeenth-century follower of Caravaggio, Bartolomeo Manfredi. It also makes proposals about Ristro’s collaboration in Manfredi’s paintings, and suggestions about his possible independent oeuvre.
