Abstract: The emergence in the last years of initiatives like the Linked Open Data (LOD) has led to a significant increase of the amount of structured semantic data on the Web. Nevertheless, the wider reuse of such data isinhibited by a variety of factors, ranging from the quality of the data to the richness/explicitness of its ontological descriptions. In this talk, we focus on the phenomenon of vagueness as a potentially problematic factor for the shareability and reusability of ontologies and semantic data, and we describe a novel approach for dealing with it. Key components of this approach include a vague sense classifier that may automatically identify vague ontological elements as well as the Vagueness Ontology, a metaontology for annotating these elements with explicit descriptions of their vagueness.
Brief Bio: Dr. Panos Alexopoulos is Semantic Applications Research Manager at Intelligent Software Components (iSOCO) S.A in Madrid, Spain, conducting and managing product-oriented R&D activities in the areas of Intelligent Information Access, Knowledge Management and Semantic Web. Prior to joining iSOCO he had been working as a Semantic Solutions Architect and Ontologist for IMC Technologies S.A. in Athens, Greece as well as a Computer Science Lecturer for Mediterranean College Athens. Panos holds a PhD in Knowledge Engineering and Management from National Technical University of Athens (2012), an MSc in Advanced Computing from Imperial College London (2005) and a diploma in Electrical & Computer Engineering from National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) (2004). He has published more than 40 articles at international conferences, journals and books while the output of his PhD thesis has been successfully applied in several commercial projects.
