Recent advances in Inference Anchoring Theory
Inference Anchoring Theory, IAT, helps to explain how the inferences that underpin argumentation are established through dialogical moves. As such, it forms a bridge between philosophical theories of language use (such as Speech Act Theory and Segmented Discourse Representation Theory) and computational models of dialogue (such as those found in both Computational Linguistics and Multi-Agent Systems research) -- but one that is focused specifically upon argument. In this talk, some of the basic tools of IAT will be introduced, before exploring their use first, in some of the most theoretically demanding linguistic environments, and then second, in a number of practical and versatile software tools deployed on the Argument Web.
