ABZWISE: An Event For Female Researchers In Science, Technology, Engineering And Mathematics (STEM)
-

This is a past event

This event is for PhD students, post graduate researchers, early career researchers and academics. There will be active workshops spanning over two weekends; 6th-7th and 27th-28th of October 2012.

ABZWISE is an opportunity for women to enhance their personal professional development in a unique way by providing space to network, strengthen and develop new skills.  Time out to work on their career and professional aspirations.  There will be presentations, discussions, activities, mentoring and networking opportunities throughout. Please click here for an insight into the selection of speakers that will speaking at the event.

ABZWISE is based on the highly successful model of EnterpriseWISE ran by the Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning (CfEL) at the University of Cambridge. CfEL has, for many years, ran customised enterprise programmes for Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) and have found those programmes to be highly impactful and uniquely different from mixed gender enterprise programmes for the following reasons:

  • Stronger networks developed
  • Greater outreach
  • Deeper levels of support
  • Inspiring to new generations
  • Support science and technology business driven by female entrepreneurs.

We want to bring these benefits to Scotland, the North East and the University of Aberdeen as part of a strategy to strengthen and extend the impact of women with STEM expertise, specialism and experience.

So what should you expect from ABZWISE?

Two intensive weekends of activity, challenge, building new connections, making new friends, exploring new ideas, increasing your personal and professional confidence ( a key aspect of all the Cambridge enterprise programmes from CfEL is building self efficacy). The opportunity to meet and candidly share experiences with women who have ‘been there and done it’ whether that is achieve success academically, commercially, started business, sold businesses, had challenges with male colleagues, faced conflicts of interest between their careers and the demands of their home and personal lives. You will learn about ‘eating frogs’, presenting yourself to positively impress investors and senior colleagues, mentoring, simple approaches to understanding organisations, ‘finance’, working in teams and leadership. And, assuming that we manage to create much of the atmosphere of Cambridge EnterpriseWISE have great fun.

Our aspiration for the programme is not just that we give the early career female STEM researchers and academics a powerful boost to their careers, but also that this can be the first part of a local legacy of a network of professional WISE women locally, providing support, mentoring and friendship to each other and bridging some of the gap between academia, industry and enterprise.

Cost

There is no charge for attending the two weekends but spaces are limited.  Tea, coffee and lunch will be provided.
