Up in the air: Communal Voice Making
Do words have a permanent affect? Can we imagine the air that we share as a “vast library of voices” as scientist and computer pioneer Charles Babbage has told us? Electronic artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s recent interactive media exhibition, Atmospheric Memory, takes its cue from these questions. However, Atmospheric Memory and Lozano-Hemmer's other related participatory works such as Voice Tunnel materialise the voices not simply in the form of words but also in the form of light, three dimensional sculptures, tactile experiences, and sonic and physical actions. In the age of cloud computing and datasets, our voices are recorded, tracked, stored and categorised on a daily basis. Indeed, Babbage’s imagination has long been manifested with sound recording and voice recognition technologies. And yet, manifestations of voices are still up in the air, not perfectly measured or locked into one single physical form, but rather distributed and shared by many. Drawing on Atmospheric Memory and Voice Tunnel, this talk will discuss the processes and implications of distributed and shared voice making.
