Dr Jonathan Hicks, lecturer in music, discusses the history and politics of English protest songs
Jo was invited to participate in a study day at Cecil Sharp House in London to mark the conclusion of, "Our Subversive Voice," a two-year research project funded by the UK’s Arts and Humanities Research Council. The project, which brought together historians, sociologists, political theorists, and musicologists, investigated the use of song to register protest through the ages, from 1600 to 2020. A new website detailing hundreds of the songs examined by the project is available at oursubversivevoice.com.
