University music students prepare for final recitals

University music students prepare for final recitals
-

This is a past event

From the 19th to the 22nd May the BMus students will take to the stage in King's College Chapel for their final exam - a recital, open to the public, marking the end of four years' hard work and countless hours of preparation.

Although this is an exam, the BMus recital is a very special event, which is open to the public. Having a public audience adds that extra performance dimension and gives the students the opportunity to perform in a real concert situation as a solo artist. The recital is optional in the music department – other students have chosen different areas of specialism.

The students have been working extremely hard at preparing their pieces and also gaining experience at performance practice through participation in the various university ensembles, concerts and master-classes.

Whether the students are going on to a career in performance, in teaching, or in community music, the performance option and recital has undoubtedly been a valuable learning experience. They have grown in confidence and ability, and are approaching the final recital with a mixture of excitement, passion and enthusiasm. Here are responses from some of the students towards how they feel about their upcoming performances:

“I am very excited about the upcoming recitals. It is an opportunity for me and my classmates to showcase our progress over our four years at university to each other; music students from other years and the wider musical community. For me personally it is very exciting to be one of two percussionists performing a recital this year: the opportunities to see an hour-long concert of solo percussion music are few and far between and these recitals provide that opportunity for the other musicians in the department to experience the solo repertoire of the less common instruments.”  Ellen Smith, BMus (Hons)

“I am feeling a mixture of terror and excitement: feeling nervous about the examination part but at the same time I am very much looking forward to performing in front of a group of friends and family, and of people who have supported me throughout uni. Feeling like I am finally able to show them that the four years have been worth it.” Ben Light BMus (Hons) Music and Communities

"Not going to lie. Really scary but super exciting at the same time! You know that the university and your friends are there to support you, not catch you out so you just have to pull yourself together and enjoy the performance!" Amy Papiransky,BMus (Hons) Education

The final year BMus recitals take place 19th-22nd May 2015 in King’s College Chapel. They are open to all and free to attend. All recitals last approximately 30 minutes.
