Graeme Stephen and Zapp-4

Graeme Stephen and Zapp-4
-

This is a past event

This is an exciting new project featuring Award winning guitarist Graeme Stephen and the Amsterdam based string Quartet Zapp-4.

The music is composed by Graeme and takes its inspiration from the sea and the Islands. The writing was started during a short period on the isle of Eigg in July 2014.

Graeme was awarded an Artists Bursary from Creative Scotland in 2014 that helped to fund this project.

The music takes the listener on a journey through the mystery and fascinations of the seas and oceans accompanied by specially commissioned films which are projected during the concert.

Zapp4

Jasper Le Clerq – Violin

Jeffrey Bruinsma - Violin

Oene Van Geel – Viola

Emile Visser - Cello

It combines groove, improvisation, and fantasy with passionate solos. On stage the group is a blast: They interact with high speed and have a wide musical spectrum. No matter how wild or mild they get, there is always a poetic side to their music.?The uniqueness of the group and its repertoire makes Zapp4 one of the most exciting string quartets today. Because of this quality Zapp4 won the Sena Toonzetters Performers Award (a contemporary award for the best ensemble of the year) in 2012 and the Kersjesprijs (a prestiguous classical award) in 2005.?Whoever is present at a Zapp performance will be guaranteed to leave the place with a big smile and freshly washed ears!?

2014 Brought us a great collaboration with Norwegian live-sampling wizzard Jan Bang (playing at the Punkt Festival, Norway) and we shared the stage with Marc Ribot at the November Music Festival.

Volkskrant: 'Zapp4 knows the recipe for musical happiness.'

NRC Handelsblad: 'Zapp4, the hardest grooving string quartet of the Netherlands.'

Graeme won the Innovation Award for his Score to the classic Silent film “Sunrise’ at the 2013 Scottish jazz awards. He won the instrumentalist of the year award at the 2012 Scottish jazz awards and has gained critical acclaim for his playing and compositions.

“Graeme Stephen again underlined the qualities that make him a player on the international jazz stage with his latest project, in which he created the soundtrack to a silent movie.” – Rob Adams Herald

“Stephen’s music, and the strength of his themes allied to the band’s spontaneous interpretations ensured sound and vision jointly held the attention all the way to the credits.” – Rob adams

“The first half of the evening was impressive, but the second half produced some of the most beautiful music and masterful playing that this reviewer has ever had the pleasure to hear. “ Jennie MAcfie,
