Professor David Smith and Dr Frauke Jürgensen invite the audience to the musical culture in the time of Bishop Elphinstone.
The Foundation Book for King's College, featured in the current exhibition, describes the choirboys and priests charged with singing the Daily Office, and mentions the role of the organist who played an instrument that was in a gallery until it was removed in the seventeenth century. The impression is given of a thriving musical establishment, but what would you have heard at a service in King’s College Chapel in Elphinstone’s day?David J. Smith and Frauke Jürgensen, from the University of Aberdeen's Music Department, explore the role of music in worship, and introduce the sort of pieces that might have been part of a broader musical culture in Aberdeen at the time.
