Ivan Pavlov, was a Russian physiologist, known for his work on classical conditioning and is a good example of behaviourist theory.

In brief, the dogs in his experiments were conditioned to associate the ringing of a bell with being fed, to such an extent that the ringing of the bell alone would cause them to salivate even in the absence of food.
Although bizarre looking, Pavlov designed his test to eliminate distractions and other influences

- An example of this mechanism can be translated into eLearning theory in terms of a high score at the end of a test
- Also, in the field of gamification / games based learning, stars or trophies awarded on the completion of a level, such as in the example below
- Both examples prompt neural pathways to produce dopamine, rewarding and associating certain behaviours with pleasure
