There are specific features in history (i.e. fluctuation or distractibility of symptoms) and examination (i.e. Hoover's / Abductors sign) as well a risk factors such as other functional disorders (chronic pain/fatigue, IBS) or pre morbid mental health problems that allow clinicians to make this diagnosis
