Examinations: Speculum, PV and Chaperone
Speculum examination:
- Chaperone and consent
- Vulval tissues healthy in appearance
- Vaginal tissues appear healthy
- Cervix appears red and inflamed
- Some evidence of old blood and vaginal discharge
PV examination:
- Mobile anteverted uterus
- Tender both lateral fornices
- Evidence of cervical excitation
Chaperone:
- Should be routinely offered in intimate examination
- Can refuse but this must be documented
- There to support patients and staff
- Should be a healthcare worker
- Ideally familiar with procedure or examination
- Ideally the same sex as the patient
- Role includes reassurance, protection of dignity, facilitating communication between doctor and patient in this setting, safeguard both patient and doctor
