Estimating Blood Loss

  • It is well known that visual estimation of bloodloss from human error due to inaccurately under or overestimating loss can lead to increased morbidity and patient safety concerns
  • Therefore, whenever possible, it is vital that in APH and PPH situations; swabs, pads and any other blood collection is measured and weighed to give as accurate a blood loss amount as possible
  • However in assessing a patient you can have a general idea of blood loss by being aware of what a pad, inco. pad or bowl may contain
  • The image opposite shows an inco. pad with 1000mls of blood on it
  • BUT always remember to consider clinical signs and symptoms too!
