The Froment's test is carried out by asking the patient to hold a piece of paper between the thumbs and index fingers while you attempt to pull it (as shown in video). In the presence of ulnar nerve palsy (Froment's sign), thumb adduction is affected as the adductor pollicis muscle is innervated by the ulnar nerve. Hence, the patient will bend the IP joint of the affected thumb in order hold the paper while you pull it during Froment's test (flexor pollicis longus is innervated by the median nerve).
