Ben's mum managed to obtain a clean catch sample of urine.
It was sent to the lab for urgent microscopy and culture. This is the preferred diagnostic test in this age group as urine dipstick is less reliable under 3 years of age.
However, in practice a positive dipstick result in a symptomatic patient would usually be treated. Some labs are not able to provide same day microscopy and empiric treatment may be necessary in young infants prior to microscopy / culture results being available.
