Classification and Types of Wounds - Bruise/Contusion

A wound is the end result of damage to the skin or other structures secondary to some from of trauma, whether accidental e.g. following an assault, or intentional e.g. the wound made by a surgeon during an operation. There are a number of differing types of wounds which you are likely to encounter. The form of the wound may differ, however general wound management principles, healing processes and potential complications are similar. What follows are some definitions of commonly encountered wounds, illustrated by some clinical examples.

A bruise is an area of injury (not unique to skin), associated with the escape of blood from ruptured underlying vessels, as a result of some form of trauma. Bruises are seen as an initial black/red area of discolouration, which gradually change colour with time, due to breakdown of haemoglobin. Resolution should be complete.
